The Inverted Democracy: Artist Statement
I’ve been on this same trail for awhile, composing this giant imaginary social studies textbook of our history. The Inverted Democracy, the life and times of the land, is totally unauthorized, ill-advised, non-existent.
It’s a series of paintings & mixed media full of humor and mischief as if told by mythic Coyote with a real sloppy edit by a totally sober Hunter Thompson. It’s a Beat poem or a Beck tune posing as a blend of paint & color & texture; a total psychedelic patchwork of the usual suspects: religion, sex, politics, science & reason, marketing, and everything else. Total adherence to the “everything is connected” ideas of the East while terrifyingly addicted to the wild West, the work that makes up The Inverted Democracy bends & blends the elements of POP while mocking & emulating FOLK.
Like a giant puzzle with the entire box of pieces jammed together not in their right places, The Inverted Democracy tries taking the pieces apart and putting them back the right way, whatever that is – and that is the entire point. To continue unraveling this mystery of ours knowing you might never get to the marrow.
